We tested it for you: The Progressive Dinner by Québec Expérience Gourmande

Estelle, our travel coordinator, took part in a fam trip in the Charlevoix region in early October. On the first evening, she headed to the Saint-Roch district in Quebec City, where she tried the progressive dinner offered by Québec Expérience Gourmande. A mystery evening to discover local cuisine in a different way, across 4 stops, and one of Toundra’s new offerings for fall 2026. Estelle shares her take for your clients.

THE PROGRESSIVE DINNER AT A GLANCE

  • Type of services: Semi-self-guided mystery dinner, in several stops
  • Region: Quebec City
  • Neighborhoods: Saint-Roch, or others on request
  • Audience: Solo travelers, couples, groups of friends

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE PROGRESSIVE DINNER

The principle of this one-of-a-kind activity is simple: the meal doesn’t take place in a single restaurant but in several, over the course of one evening. The format, meanwhile, is semi-self-guided. Your clients are welcomed by a local guide at the first address, then directed to the remaining stops using invitation cards handed to them during the evening by their server.

And that’s where the element of surprise comes in. Your travelers don’t know which restaurants they’ll visit until the very last minute. Each new address is revealed by opening the next card and, honestly, it really adds to the fun!

For Estelle, this is the formula’s first strength. No restaurant to choose, no reservation to manage, no last-minute comparing of online reviews. For one evening, your foodie clients benefit from the know-how of Québec Expérience Gourmande, which knows the local food scene well and has an address book as long as your arm. She really enjoyed letting herself be carried along.

At Toundra, we also liked the pace. The evening includes 4 culinary stops, and each one lasts about an hour, which leaves time to settle in, chat and savor, without ever feeling rushed.

Worth noting: getting between stops is done on foot, within a small area of 8 minutes’ walk at most. Estelle recommends that your clients leave the car parked for two reasons: parking is mostly paid in Quebec City, and alcoholic drinks are included at each stop. Don’t hesitate to book your clients in the neighborhood of the activity that same night. According to Estelle, it’s the most convenient and comfortable option for them.

WHAT SETS THE PROGRESSIVE DINNER APART?

What sets this activity apart from a simple meal is its mystery side. Discovering several unknown places in a single evening also means seeing a Quebec City neighborhood from a different angle, away from the addresses you find first in guidebooks. Saint-Roch, just beyond the fortifications, is often overlooked by clients in favor of Old Quebec. This is a chance to discover it through an original, friendly experience.

Another plus for your files, and one that fits Toundra Voyages’ DNA well: it’s a tailor-made experience. The organizers’ address book allows them to adjust the route to your clients’ requests, whether it’s group size, particular wishes or dietary restrictions. Larger groups can also be split into small tables.

Estelle got to discover a typical microbrewery, two Italian spots with distinct atmospheres and an elegant restaurant styled as a speakeasy with modern Québécois flavors. No two evenings are alike. Your clients vacationing in la belle province on a loop starting from Quebec City can try the adventure at the beginning and at the end of their stay without having the same experience twice!

WHO SHOULD YOU RECOMMEND IT TO?

In all transparency, this isn’t an activity for every profile.

First, the activity is for adults only. Second, the evening lasts about 4 hours. That may feel long to more introverted travelers, or to those who prefer a quick dinner before going to bed early. And the first meeting time, set for 5 p.m., may put off Europeans who aren’t used to dining at Quebec hours.

On the other hand, it’s a fantastic evening of conviviality and exchange, ideal for travelers who want to meet people. Sociable, epicurean types who want to enjoy a food-filled evening without watching the clock. On the team, we didn’t find it long at all, quite the opposite.

According to Estelle, the time isn’t an issue. Just make the schedule clear to your clients and encourage them to have a very light lunch. Besides, on an autumn or winter trip, night falls around 5 p.m., so they’ll be ready to sit down to dinner. Take it from the local experts!

TOUNDRA’S VERDICT IN BRIEF

The progressive dinner is a great way to spend an evening in Quebec City without having to think twice. It is especially suited to travelers who enjoy surprising experiences, discovering new flavors and meeting people. This activity easily finds its place in a Quebec itinerary in any season and pairs well with a first day in the city. Book it for adults, keeping in mind the length of the evening and its tailor-made nature.

“The experience is really fun: you let yourself be guided, and there are no choices to make. It’s ideal for travelers who want to meet people or who don’t want to search for somewhere to eat in the evening.” – Estelle, travel coordinator
